Careers

What qualifications do I need?

To become an apprentice at BT, you must:

  • be allowed to work in the UK
  • be aged at least 16 on 1st September 2008
  • have good written and communication skills
  • enjoy helping people and solving problems
  • be reliable, organised and willing to work hard

Good grades

Depending on which Apprenticeship you apply for, you will need to have a minimum of between 3 and 5 GCSEs at grade G or above (or the equivalent qualifications). These must include English Language and Maths. Anyone with A-levels as well as the minimum GCSE requirements are obviously welcome to apply.

And if you didn't do GCSEs, remember that:

  • a Scottish Standard Grade 3 counts as a grade C GCSE
  • a pass at GNVQ intermediate level counts as 4 grade C GCSEs
  • a pass at GNVQ advanced level counts as 5 grade C GCSEs

For the BT Operate, BT Retail and Openreach higher Apprenticeship scheme, you'll need 2 A levels as well (or equivalent, including Scottish Highers). To find out the requirements for this, and all the specific roles, check out the  what will I be doing? section.

Driving licence

For some engineering posts you'll need to be able to drive. So if you don't already hold a full driving licence, you will have to get one within a year of starting, or as soon as you can after you turn 17.

Colour blindness

Unfortunately, we can't take you on in some of the technical apprenticeship roles if you are colour blind, because you won't be able to do some of the work. But there's no problem with you applying for Business Administration, Customer Service and Customer Support Apprenticeships.
