I didn't fancy uni or A-levels. I just didn't want to be there - I wanted something hands-on. Since starting my Apprenticeship at BT, I've had no regrets. Day to day I install phone lines, drive the van, promote the company, meet customers face to face. There's a lot more to the Apprenticeship though, some amazing opportunities to be had.

I'm currently working with the General Manager in Coventry, reviewing our branch's expenses. This time last year I was sitting in an exam. Now I'm discussing finances of over £400,000. How many 18-year-olds are able to say that?

I take great pride in what I do. The thing about BT is they don't just want someone for a nine to five. They want people who can do their job and more. This year, through BT and the Prince's Trust, I spent time leading a group of 15- to 23-year-olds from my home town who'd been having a tough time getting a job. I helped them look at all the options and listen to each other's opinions. It really broadened my horizons too and helped me to understand other people's points of view: an important skill both inside and outside of work.

Even my mates have noticed a change. They reckon I'm more organised and confident. I guess I'm noticing it too. At the beginning I was terrified of presentations, whereas last week I presented to a room of other Apprentices and the Midlands General Manager. I actually quite enjoyed it. The Apprenticeship has been a steep learning curve, but completely worth it.
