It’s a sad fact that the British average working week is among the highest in Europe. On top of which, we have one of the longest commuting times as well.
BT is among a group of leading companies who are committed to changing that, with the development of smarter working practices – such as flexible working, remote working, mobile working and working from home.
Flexibility is at the heart of our business and management strategy. And in BT Retail, it’s very much business-as-usual. Seven out of ten BT people work flexibly and nearly ten per cent are home-based. We’ve found it increases productivity, cuts costs, motivates our people and releases more potential.
In a fiercely competitive sector, pioneering the most flexible policies helps us to attract and retain the best people. It also opens new doors to people with mobility problems, parents with young children or those with caring responsibilities.
The results are remarkable. Today, our people now take 63 per cent less sick leave and are 20 per cent more productive. The staff retention rate following maternity leave stands at 99 per cent, compared with the UK average of 47 per cent.
And we reckon that through travelling less, our staff are saving some 12 million litres of fuel a year – or in CO2 emissions terms, a reduction of 54,000 tonnes.
