Job title: Apprentice - Technical Office Based
Business Unit: BT Wholesale
Joined: September 2005
I joined BT because I have a keen interest in the latest technologies and wanted a ringside seat on the future of telecommunications. Since arriving, I’ve been learning about the new 21C network and have been staggered by the total transformation that is about to happen. It really does feel like I’ve joined a company that is on the verge of an incredible change.
BT also appealed because of its focus on learning. It offers the chance to study and work at the same time and that seemed like an excellent way to build my skills and get started on my career.
I’ve completed my BTEC and, like all Apprentices, I’m now collecting evidence to count towards my NVQ. I’m out on work placements a lot so I’m getting plenty of experience and learning about other parts of the planning community. I’ve found that shadowing more experienced team members is a good way to learn, but you’re also sent on regular training courses to top up your skills and keep you up to date with the latest developments.
My operational team is at the heart of change within BT as we’re responsible for carrying out capacity planning for the current network and preparing for the roll-out of 21C. Talking to my colleagues, I’m getting the impression that things are always changing here because there is always another big technological advance on its way. The most recent one was Broadband. Just by taking a positive approach to any change and seeing it as an opportunity rather than something to be feared, you can have a positive affect on yourself and the people around you.
