Two Ticks - Positive about disabled peopleBT's Equal Opportunity Policy and the Two Ticks Scheme

As well as meeting its legal requirements, BT is committed to proactively developing and sustaining positive measures that will encourage the recruitment, development and retention of disabled people.

To support this commitment, BT has signed up to use the Job Centre Plus 'Two Ticks' disability symbol. This means that BT now has a commitment under each of the following areas.

Job Interviews

BT guarantees to interview all applicants with a disability who meet the minimum criteria for an advertised job vacancy and consider them on their abilities. If, owing to a disability, a person has been unable to reach minimum criteria, but can provide alternative evidence of their level of competence, that person should be interviewed. In addition, disabled applicants will be given preference for jobs if they are one of several equally suitable candidates. Full advantage will be taken of available Government schemes to aid the employment of people with disabilities.

Consultation

At least once a year, BT will consult disabled employees on what the company can do to make sure they receive continued development and use their abilities at work. This can form part of Personal Development Review (PDR) discussions. BT also holds regular AccessAbility Roadshows (formerly known as Disability Forums).

Retaining employees if they become disabled

BT will make every effort to ensure that employees who become disabled can stay in employment. If appropriate, line managers will be supported in providing suitable retraining and rehabilitation.

Improving knowledge

BT will take action to ensure that key employees e.g. senior managers or line managers with vacancies, develop an awareness of disability, so that our commitments can work.

Checking progress and planning ahead

All these commitments will be reviewed at least once a year and future improvement plans put in place.BT people will be told about progress and future plans. To support this policy further BT is a Gold Card member of the Employers' Forum on Disability, which was set up to help provide a best practice standard for the employment of people with disabilities. As Gold Card Members BT people may apply for access to the Members' section of the EFD site.BT is actively pursuing the achievement of the best practice standards recommended by the Forum in its 10 Point Agenda as described in its Action File.
