My favourite 'bedside book' to dip into. Deeply personal, richly observed narrative of life, philosophy, nature and the seasons observed from a remote Virginia cabin. The best account I know of being ‘in the present’.
  • The Ecology of Commerce by Paul Hawken
Despite being written over ten years ago this is still the best account of the potential of the business community to be at the forefront of solving the ecological crisis.
  • Natural Capitalism by Amory Hunter Lovins and Paul Hawken
A later collaboration with the amazing Amory Lovins, founder of the Rocky Mountain Institute. This book explores what capitalism would look like if it genuinely took account of the natural world.

Deeply philosophical account of the human disconnection with the natural world. The chapter 'The Forgetting and Remembering of Air' helped inspire me to start CarbonSense.

Stephan is a great writer and teacher who argues passionately that human society needs to rekindle its relationship with the living earth. He makes science literally come alive in a most playful way, and articulates clearly the need for a combination of the scientific / rational with the intuitive / qualitative approach in all we do.
