Our people

With a workforce of around 106,000 people, we have a huge opportunity to improve our environmental performance by changing the way we work.

We want to harness the goodwill and commitment of our people by encouraging them to take action at home and at work.

Leading the way

BT’s environment and climate change task force develops and implements our strategy, guiding the environmental management team on reporting and improvement programmes across BT. Every part of the business is involved and every employee has the opportunity to participate.

Carbon clubs

BT people are being encouraged to form ‘carbon clubs’ to share their ideas with colleagues and to take action together. We have more than 80 clubs so far, involving more than 500 people and want to expand this community significantly over the coming year.

Creative challenge

BT’s first ‘creative challenge’ competition was launched in June 2007 to stimulate interesting and exciting ideas for communicating the issues surrounding climate change and encouraging people to take action.

The challenge was a collaboration between BT and the London College of Communication. It was open to BT people and students. We are now focused on implementing some of the creative ideas.

Living lightly

We held a 'living lightly' day in September 2007 and encouraged BT people to make small changes in their lives that would have a positive impact on the environment.

  • A dedicated website was launched to fire people’s imaginations and to capture personal pledges.
  • Employees were encouraged to involve their families and friends and, to date, more than 9,000 pledges have been made.
