Huw Owen was appointed president of Global Health at BT Global Services (BTGS) on 7 October 2011, reporting to BTGS chief executive, Jeff Kelly. In this role, he is responsible for all aspects of BT’s global healthcare business. This includes BT’s large and complex NHS IT projects, developing its comprehensive portfolio of innovative healthcare solutions, and the strategic growth of BT’s healthcare business in the UK and internationally.
Huw has a proven track record of success in an extensive and wide-ranging career.
Prior to joining BT, he led Hewlett Packard’s (HP) defence and security business, which included partnering with the Ministry of Defence to deliver major transformational projects and providing innovative technology solutions which helped the armed forces do their jobs effectively. Before that, Huw was chief executive of Atlas – a consortium of four companies including HP - delivering the Defence Information Infrastructure.
A qualified lawyer, Huw worked for the global law firm DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary before he joined HP in 1998. He has also worked for the Asia Foundation formulating and driving national reform programmes in Cambodia and subsequently advising the United Nations on a similar programme in Central Asia. Before this, he served with the Royal Hong Kong Police Force, latterly as a detective inspector.
Huw graduated with a bachelor of arts with honours (public administration) from the University of Wales and passed the Common Professional Examination and Law Society’s Final Examination in 1990. He was admitted to the Law Society Roll in 1992 following Articles at Farrer & Co.
A keen skier and mountain enthusiast, Huw and his wife Heather - a consultant surgeon - have two children; Will and Hannah, aged 15 and 11.
