The NHS National Programme for Information Technology (NPfIT) is the world's largest civilian IT project. Managed by NHS Connecting for Health, it aims to improve patient care by enabling clinicians and other NHS staff to increase their efficiency and effectiveness by giving them access to patient information safely, securely and easily. A key element of the programme is creating an NHS Care Records Service to improve the sharing of patients' records across the NHS with their consent.

BT is playing a prominent role on the NPfIT and is delivering three of its major contracts:

  • The Spine - the national electronic patient record database and messaging system
  • N3 - the fast, secure, national broadband network
  • London local service provider - integrated local patient record applications and IT systems

Mary’s Story is an interactive video presenting a vision of the potential NHS of the future, supported by new computer systems being delivered as part of the NHS National Programme for IT.
