Electronic Prescription Service

The Electronic Prescription Service operates throughout England and will be fully integrated with the NHS Care Records Service.

The service allows prescriptions (including repeat dispensing) generated by GPs and other prescribers to be transferred electronically between prescribers, dispensers and the reimbursement agency, currently the Prescription Pricing Authority.

This improves patient safety and greatly reduces transcription errors and prescription fraud. It means that many patients will not have to visit their GP to collect repeat prescriptions and instead will have them sent electronically to their chosen pharmacy. As a result, GPs can spend less time administering repeat prescriptions.
