Focus on Scotland: We're pitching in to support Scottish Rugby clubs

14 March 2017

A £1.6 million Club Sustainability Fund was created to enable investment in the domestic game across a four-year period, made possible by our partnership.

Six more clubs will benefit from grants totalling £217,000 this season, taking the total number assisted by the Club Sustainability Fund to date to 97.

The fund enables clubs to improve their infrastructure and facilities. Several have now completed their development projects, with others nearing completion.

For instance, Marr Rugby Club in South Ayrshire received a £50,000 cash injection to invest in changing rooms, to accommodate a growing number of teams and the development of a women’s section.

And Biggar RC in South Lanarkshire have extended their pitch and training facilities thanks to £38,000 from the Club Sustainability Fund and additional support from sportscotland. The club now boasts three new pitches and a floodlit playing surface.

The club’s Nigel Pacey said: “It has been a real pleasure to work on, and deliver, the project with the help of the Club Sustainability Fund. Our club can now provide the facilities needed for the community and for the continued development of the sport. The reaction is great to see and hear, with visiting clubs amazed at what has been achieved.”

BT Scotland director Brendan Dick added: “We’re really pleased to see the impact the Club Sustainability Fund has had at a grassroots level since its launch.

“We know what a difference these grants make to local clubs, their members, players and the communities around them. It’s a privilege to be involved in supporting club rugby in Scotland in such a tangible way.”
