Heritage Voices

BT’s story in the words of people who have made history

The Heritage Voices oral history programme has a team of volunteer interviewers, drawn from all parts of BT, recording stories of BT people, past and present, capturing memories of technology innovations and stories of social history.

These oral histories will be permanently preserved in BT Archives where they are available in full for historical research, revealing personal perspectives on BT’s heritage that complement the official corporate records.

We have had over 190 enquiries from people, past and present, who are interested in sharing their experiences of their career in BT and the GPO.

From these interviews we have delivered a number of programmes:

  • History Pods – listen to soundbites from the interviews on various themes such as emergency, social impact and changing technologies from an iconic telephone and add your memories to the collection for others to listen to. The History Pod soundbites can also be used for BT community and education activities and Connected Earth Partner Museum events.
  • Education – in our Make a Museum lesson, students curate their own exhibition of audio, images, documents and film in one of eight themes. The cross-curricular resource for key stages 2 and 3 and accompanying lesson support material, is free and exclusive to Connected Earth at www.connected-earth.com/makeamuseum
