Reaching out

I'm really pleased to be able to welcome you to this first external edition of our Better World magazine. If you work for BT you shouldnt notice any huge change: the big difference is that we're now making the magazine available outside BT, so if you're part of that new bigger audience, a special welcome and we hope you'll enjoy what you find.

Better World

magazine is for anyone interested in how BT engages with the many communities touched by its business but is also for those who want to know more about how our organisation is tackling some of the most serious issues facing responsible business today. That gives us plenty of scope. In each issue well be including stories that reflect the diversity of what we do, giving the low-down on any big developments but also talking to the people behind the news, the BT people who work so selflessly on community-related projects and some of the people who have worked with them.

"Globally significant energy deal"

So for instance in this issue we carry a big story on BTs announcement that it will be buying all its energy from renewable resources. This move has been described by independent commentators as "globally significant". Certainly we are a major energy consumer, and the contract is the worlds largest for renewable energy to date. Theres a business case as well as a moral one behind the move, and we hope it will inspire others. Check out the story for full details.

We interview Carol Borghesi, who apart from running BTs contact centres is the companys disability champion and a trustee of ChildLine. We talk to Carol about how and why she manages these commitments.

We carry an update on the efforts of our stalwart corporate responsibility volunteers who have been looking at how they can live greener everyday lives: could you cut the non-recyclable waste you generate in the home? Find out how our volunteers have been getting on.

Finally for those who still think that corporate responsibility doesnt connect to good business practice, we look at some interesting research among new graduates: the research suggests that a companys ethical stances can be as influential as salary when tomorrows high fliers are choosing who they want to work for.

So if youre in BT, we hope youll continue to find the magazine informative and enjoyable. If youre outside BT, we hope this will give you a useful insight into all we do. And whoever you are, wed really welcome your thoughts and comments. Youll find the email address at the bottom of the page.
