Welcome to the autumn
edition of Better World magazine. To many, CSR (corporate
social responsibility) is epitomised by our investment in the
community e.g. our support of charities and our education and
digital inclusion programmes which aim to ensure that nobody gets
left behind in the new communications age. But CSR extends well
beyond community investment and in this edition we introduce a
few of the broader topics covered by our commitment to making a
better world.
Roger Cowe, in his first piece for Better World examines the issue
of reporting and asks whether all companies should be compelled by
law to report on their social and environmental activities. Should
companies get to choose what or indeed whether to report
and what safeguards do the public have that reported information
is accurate?
The implications of new European legislation which aims to limit
the impact of electrical and electronic equipment on the
environment are explored as BT prepares for the introduction of
the WEEE and RoHS directives in 2006.
We take a trip of a lifetime with a group of intrepid BT employees
as they recall their trek through the
Himalayas
in aid of ChildLine a journey that raised 65,000 for the
childrens charity and proved to be a life changing experience
for many of those who took part.
Our final story explores the growing trend of home working and
asks whether in addition to improving the work-life balance of
employees, there may also be gains to be made in terms of
productivity and environmental protection.
I hope you enjoy this latest edition and as always,
your comments, thoughts and suggestions are always welcome.
