In this BT and Cisco sponsored paper, six academics from around the world recommend a mind-altering approach to Corporate Sustainability. They emphasise innovation as the crucial driver, dispel myths, illuminate the investment environment and provide real examples of how to transform organisations for sustainable growth.
Action or Aspiration? Sustainability in the Workplace
The BT-sponsored research by the Economist Intelligence Unit, "Action or Aspiration? Sustainability in the Workplace" indicate that companies are failing to realise the business benefits of sustainability programmes. While almost half said that sustainability programmes helped improve brand value, just one in five felt they improved profitability. They also highlight the fact that UK organisations lag behind their global counterparts when it comes to engaging their employees with sustainability initiatives.
A Realist's Guide to Green Data Centres
Data centres are an interesting sustainability case study. This paper looks at how the work being done in the data centre is crucial to IT’s attempts to move from sustainability problem to sustainability solution.
Carbon Impact Assessment
In this white paper BT lays out the case for careful analysis of the networked IT-related carbon footprint, as an essential forerunner to practical methods of reducing greenhouse gas emissions resulting from companies' ICT estates. Our analysis enables organisations to understand whether they are genuinely reducing their environmental impact; or simply moving the issue elsewhere. Finally, the white paper suggests practical ways – proven by BT and others – of using networked IT innovation to lastingly reduce CO2 emissions resulting from business activities.
Business of Sustainability
Even though stainability and other aspects of CSR feature prominently on the agenda in many of the world’s boardrooms, it still leaves boards with big questions to answer. To help, BT developed a process that focuses attention on the aspects of sustainability and CSR that will make the biggest difference to our future, and that makes it much easier for us to judge and report on our progress. This paper outlines what’s involved in that process, and provides further detail on the supporting business case for sustainability.
The Materiality Report : Aligning Strategy, Performance and Reporting
This report, jointly authored by BT, LRQA and AccountAbility, proposes a materiality toolkit that will help businesses align their strategies and performance management (including reporting) to emerging social and environmental constraints and opportunities. The report recognises that the most important contribution of businesses to social and environmental challenges will be in what they do in achieving success rather than what they avoid doing.
An abridged version of The Materiality Report is also available to download.
Building Competitiveness - Mapping BT’s indirect economic impacts
BT has recently worked with Accountability to develop a better understanding of its indirect economic impacts, which includes an analysis of the contribution of the wider ICT sector.
