ICT as a mode of transportPDF file  [174kb]

BT asked Forum for the Future to conduct a review considering the extent to which Information Communications Technology (ICT) is currently used within the UK to meet transport policy goals.  The vision of the paper is that ICT could be treated as if it were a mode of transport, equivalent to other modes such as rail, car or air travel and could be used to help reduce demand by other travel modes.  The report sets out the current position and puts forward recommendations both for the ICT industry and Government.

Broadband: The role for communications in beating congestion 

The UK suffers from the worst traffic congestion in Europe. But replacing just one in ten of our journeys could change all that. This report analyses the growth in UK and regional traffic which has seen an average growth of 19 percent in the past decade and is a call to action for those involved with traffic management, employers, commuters and shoppers.

A report examining the use of ICT and Broadband by community groups. Wanting to better understand use of ICT in public access points, BT commissioned SustainIT to look into the subject. The report concludes  'Broadband has helped to overcome social barriers between users and had a very significant or significant impact on the community - although the forms this takes varies between organisations'

BT invited Forum for the Future to review the social, economic and environmental impacts of this new, always on high speed technology. Their report describes an extensive 'triple bottom line' sustainability impact analysis and makes a number of recommendations to BT and others.

Connecting people: tackling exclusion?PDF document [977Kb]

A report examining the impact on and use of the internet by socially excluded groups in London Commissioned by Greater London Authority (GLA) and BT and carried out by IECRC and Citizens Online. Technology cannot pull people out of social exclusion but it can play a vital role in helping to connect people and communities for a better life. The report identifies policy areas and future action concerning the targeting of resources and interventions to widen that experience for those not connected in order to help them reap the social and economic benefits.
