Home Business Report 2008

The largest ever survey of home businesses in the UK gets underway on 20 August 2008. The 2008 Home Business Report is asking home businesses across the land questions on their business, lifestyle and technology, in a bid to uncover what's happening in entrepreneurial homes.

The survey is timely, with several recent announcements on the rise in the number of people starting and growing a business from home. Want to know who home business owners turn to for advice, which is the most popular room to convert into a home office, or how much is spent each year on homeworking technology? This survey will provide the answers and will also reveal the UK’s top home business hotspots.

The survey is being managed by home business company, Enterprise Nation, and supported by BT. The Survey can be accessed via the home page at http://www.enterprisenation.com and takes only a few minutes to complete. It is open to anyone who is starting and growing a business from home. The research is being undertaken by Trends Research Ltd and analysed on a regional / postcode basis. Data from respondents will not be shared with third parties.

Full results will be available in the 2008 Home Business Report, launched during BT’s Small Business Week.

Sustain IT Report 2008

The BT sponsored independent report “Making Sustainability Real – A Challenge for Regional Agencies” has been produced by the UK Centre for Economic and Environmental Development (UK CEED). The report examines the sustainable development strategies of every English region, Scotland and Wales.

It looks at good practice examples from across the regions and nations of the UK in a number of areas such as:

  • how regions are taking action on climate change,
  • what regional support there is for businesses selling goods or services that address environmental issues,
  • how small businesses are being encouraged to be more environmentally friendly,
  • what encouragement there is of the use of IT and communications technologies to reduce the demand for travel, and
  • how digital inclusion is being supported (ensuring that individuals and organisations have full access to, and the skills necessary to benefit from, ICT).

The report shows that there are good things happening across all parts of the UK but concludes that regions and nations might share these projects and initiatives better and possibly also join them up across regional boundaries.

The impact of BT across the UK

BT operates in many different ways across every region of the UK, supporting communities, businesses, individuals and the economy.

The Social Study 2006 report ('The Economic Impact of BT in Great Britain') was published in March 2007, and was produced by BT with economic analysis by DTZ Consulting and Research.

It shows that BT generates £10.1 billion each year for the British economy, in terms of the positive contributions made by BT through the salaries and wages of employees and contractors, and the beneficial impact of its procurement and overall expenditure around the UK.

The report highlights that, in England, Wales and Scotland, BT:

  • Is responsible for the employment of more than 94,000 people - 79,000 direct employees and 15,000 contractors
  • Spending power provides work for a further 160,000 people in the businesses that supply its equipment and services
  • Pays average annual salaries and wages of more than £26,000 - 25 per cent above the national average
  • Ploughed an extra £8.8 billion into local economies through spending and procurement on capital and revenue projects in the 12 months ending March 31, 2006
  • Committed more than £20 million to community, charity and voluntary programmes, spread around every part of Britain in the same year (2005-2006)

Findings are expressed as a "Gross Value Added" (GVA) financial contribution. The GVA for BT's activities in Great Britain as a whole is assessed at £10,096 million for last year. In London alone, BT's GVA contribution totals about £2.7 billion a year. The same, proportionate, positive impact is enjoyed by the economies of Scotland, Wales and all the English regions.

This study prepared by BT, updates the results of a similar study undertaken by DTZ Pieda Consulting for BT in 2004. It analyses the overall UK position and each region of the UK (in terms of Regional Development Agency, RDA, boundaries), including Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
