Farooq Hakim

Farooq Hakim is the Regional Director for the North East. Farooq is part of the Technology, Service & Operation leadership team with twenty plus year’s involvement in the delivery of complex business transformation programmes with roles at all levels ranging from application development through to Chief Technology Officer (CTO), General Manager (GM), Chief Operating Officer (COO), Vice President (VP) and Chief Information Officer (CIO).

Farooq has well-rounded skills in Sales, Client Relationship, Consultancy, Commercial Management, Bid / Programme Management, Solutions Architecture and Contract Management. He has held leadership roles on a number of major programmes playing a significant part in winning and delivering ICT and BPO business in excess of £4billion for Global Services. Farooq has a really entrepreneurial approach to business in creating possibilities and delivering value by applying his excellent commercial skills, drive for innovation and customer focus.

Farooq is currently the CIO for Group Services with responsibility for delivering ICT transformations for a number of group functions globally including BT Facility Services, BT Supply Chain, BT Legal & Law, BT Central Business Services, BT India, Communications, Governance & Compliance, Better Futures, HR Learning and Finance. The Finance Transformation programme costing £200m will deliver £73m of saving per year, a single global Oracle platform and implement the new IASB IFRS15 revenue accounting standard.

One of Farooq’s key previous roles was the Chief Operating Officer for the 10 year BT GS South Tyneside Strategic Partnership. As the BTST Ltd. COO he had P&L and operational responsibility for 500 TUPE staff and 100+ BT professional services staff delivering back office services such as HR, Payroll, Procurement and Finance. He was accountable for £300m in revenue and a £40m investment budget ensuring that the transformed business services delivered the required financial benefits to a tune of £110m which included savings of £60m from 3rd Party procurement spend. Additionally he was accountable for local regeneration which involved the creation of 750 new jobs and the construction of a new landmark building.

In 2014 Farooq was included in The Journal’s list of “most influential” people in the North East. The Journal commendation says Farooq represents the local face of BT, protecting and enhancing its reputation by helping key opinion formers appreciate its strategic goals and providing leadership for regional development and growth.

As the BT Group North East Regional Director Farooq represents the local face of BT, protecting and enhancing BT’s reputation by helping key opinion formers appreciate BT’s strategic goals and provide thought leadership for regional communities acting as a driver for regional development and growth. The role is at the forefront of communicating and representing BT in critical areas of the business such as the development of the Digital Economy, our partnering work on Next Generation Access and our broader BT brand supporting activities.

Farooq continually looks to develop his skills and knowledge with the latest thinking and in March 2014 graduated from Oxford University (Pembroke College) with an MSc in Major Programme Management. The thesis he completed at Oxford on Organisational Design won the APM Geoffrey Trimble 2014 Award for Academic Work. Farooq is a non-exec at Sunderland University and North East Chamber of Commerce Governor.
