In The Netherlands, BT started its activities in 1989, targeting businesses with telecoms solutions. In 1997, BT started a joint-venture with the NS (the Dutch railways), named Telfort. In 2001 Telfort was split-up in mobile operator O2 (nowadays Telfort again), and BT Ignite, supplier of phone-, data-, and internet connections.

Nowadays the Benelux organisation, established in 2002, operates out of three offices, with two data centres and two Network Control Centres. BT Benelux employs around 2.200 people including over 600 IT-specialists.
