BT has been present in the Spanish market since 1989. Today we serve the whole of Spain from our headquarters in Madrid and local sites in Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla, Bilbao, La Coruña, Vigo and Málaga. BT Spain has 700 employees and has been growing faster than the market for some 15 years. In 2003/04 BT Spain grew more than double the ICT market average.

BT Spain provides a wide range of IT and communication services. For example, we were the first Spanish telecom operator to offer public IP telephony services, and now provide IP telephony to over 25,000 customers in many industry sectors. Our MPLS network connects Spain with more than 90 countries, including Brazil, Mexico and Argentina, and we offer a wide range of network security and management services, including Secure Networking, Identity management, Secure Communications, Managed Firewall, Antivirus and BRS.

Network

BT’s network infrastructure in Spain provides more than 10,000 client ports with direct access and supports multimedia, voice and data services throughout the country. The network is connected to BT´s pan-European multimedia communications network, to that of our partners on the continent and in the rest of the world. Our network services include ADSL; Frame Relay; IP access, transport, and telephony; content hosting; and e-business solutions.

BT´s IP network in Spain plays a central role in the delivery of next-generation services throughout the national territory. With more than 11,000 kilometres of optical fibre it represents an investment of € 840 million, and was the world’s first IP telephony network to deliver PSTN-like services.

Customers

BT has enterprise customers across the spectrum of Spanish business, including five of the top ten companies in Spain. From the recently released IBEX list of Spain’s top 35 companies, 16 are existing BT customers. BT Spain customers include:

  • 3 of the principal electricity companies
  • 2 of the major petroleum companies
  • 5 of the 6 most important financial firms
  • 2 of the 3 major publishing houses
  • 2 of the 4 major road transport companies
  • 3 of the 5 principal auditoriums
  • 3 of the 5 first class RRHH enterprises
  • 2 of the major companies in the construction sector

Notable financial sector customers include SCH, Spain’s largest bank, as well as the savings bank, Caixa Galicia, Grupo Santander, Caja Rural del Sur and La Caixa Rural de Lugo. Major public sector customers include Inem (National Employment Institute), the Ministry of Public Administration, Red.es, the Ministry of Defence and the Comunidad de Madrid. BT also has strong presence in the Spanish SME market, with 70,000 customers.

Awards

MobileXpress, the BT managed service that uses straightforward client software to access critical applications remotely, recently won a “Best Ideas of 2005” award. The awards, which are organised by organised by the Spanish publication, Actualidad Economica, recognise the most innovative ideas developed in Spain in 2005. MobileXpress was one of the winners in the technology category.
