BT's response to Ofcom's consultation regarding proposals to amend the guidance on acceptable use of 070 personal numbers

Issued October 26, 2005

Summary

BT has long been aware of a range of problems associated with the 070 number range.  Whilst not in the Personal Numbering market, we are affected by it, often adversely, as an originator or transit network of calls to the range.  Oftel had previously sought to address some of these problems, culminating in its October 2001 Statement "Restoring Trust in Personal Numbering".

The volume of investigations into mis-use of 070 numbers that Ofcom has mounted recently strongly suggests there still being something amiss.

As such, BT welcomes any reasonable measures that will help Ofcom to ensure that the range is used appropriately, and that responsible communications providers and customers are not exploited.  The proposed paragraph seems to be a step in the right direction.
