BT's response to the consultation 'The Future Licensing of DAB Digital Radio'

BT's response to the consultation 'The Future Licensing of DAB Digital Radio'

Issued March 15, 2006

Executive Summary

BT believes that when awarding multiplex licences Ofcom should also consider:

  • the data services which will sit along side the sound broadcast services and use a significant proportion of the capacity of a multiplex. Data capacity can be used to provide innovative new services such as TV, file download and electronic program services which will complement the sound services and facilitate innovative device developments and expand user use of DAB radio as demonstrated in the BT Movio pilot in London.

  • the nature of the coverage being provided, not just the geographic extent of coverage and the timing of the roll-out of coverage.  A key factor in take-up will be the provision of coverage for indoor devices, both classic kitchen radio types but also for the new class of handheld devices.

BT also believes that a clear set of criteria, their relative weighting and how they will be used in the evaluation of proposals for the licences should be published.
