Openreach launches its charter

In the autumn of 2015 Openreach launched its charter, outlining its ambitions for building Britain's connected future.

Openreach has now taken fibre to 24m homes, including three million in hard-to-reach rural areas, in partnership with the government. It has cut the waiting time for installation appointments and it’s fixing faults even faster.

But as the pace of technology change accelerates, and customer expectations move ever higher, Openreach knows it has to move with them.

The Charter is a set of commitments which it has shared with industry, the media and customers. It comprises six commitments, showing the steps already taken and those it will take in future to make them a reality.

Openreach improves superfast broadband checker

Openreach has overhauled its Superfast website to provide even better information around fibre availability.

In August 2014, Openreach started to publish fibre availability at a street cabinet level rather than at local exchange level, and in December 2014 provided visibility at a phone number and address level.

The commitment to providing the best information on fibre availability has now gone a step further with the introduction of the ‘fibre journey’. This provides people with far greater detail on when they can get fibre service from any communications provider working with Openreach by showing an eight-step journey for the deployment of fibre to the cabinet (FTTC).

The fibre journey provides people with details on the steps Openreach goes through to build a fibre connection through to activation and ready for service. A map will remain below the fibre journey, showing the exchange and provide its name, status, cabinet number and fibre technology.

The new system enables end customers to see simple, incremental steps of the journey Openreach makes on their fibre build instead of sitting in a static category. It provides an indicative timeline for when end customers can expect fibre broadband enabled from current status; and a reflection of the real challenges that Openreach is overcoming to bring fibre broadband to the UK.

BT recruiting new apprentices

BT has launched a campaign to recruit hundreds of new apprentices across the UK this year.

We’ve been training apprentices for more than 50 years and we’re one of the UK’s leading apprentice recruiters. We offer a range of programmes, depending on qualifications. The minimum age for is 16 and there’s no upper age limit. The most successful applicants will start work in September.

If you know someone who would be ideal for joining our apprenticeship scheme, please encourage them to apply.

Deprived areas get digital help

BT and Barclays are providing free wi-fi and digital support in deprived areas in England. The programme will see wi-fi provided to 100 libraries and community centres. Specially trained members of Barclays staff are helping people build confidence and develop digital skills.

BT wants to ensure that everyone can access the digital world and have the skills and they need to stay online in the long term. For the elderly and unemployed, access and long term support in the community is essential. This partnership with Barclays will ensure that support is available for those that need it the most.

 

Support Supercharge Paralympics GB!

BT has pledged to support the British Paralympic Association to help ‘Supercharge ParalympicsGB, building on our existing commitment to support the British Paralympic team over the course of 2016.

Supercharge ParalympicsGB, is the first major public-facing campaign the British Paralympic Association (BPA) has created to excite fans of Paralympic sport and raise funds for ParalympicsGB. Funds raised will help best prepare the team in the crucial final days before Rio and lay the ground for future success.

The Supercharge ParalympicsGB campaign includes a Text to Donate facility – TEXT “SUPER” to 70700 - and a wide range of fundraising tools and equipment.

Each text will result in a £5 donation to British Paralympic Association (Charity no. 802385 England/Wales), plus standard network charges (which vary based on service provider rates).
