Seen and Heard awards 2009

The partnership between BT and the UK Youth Parliament is now in its seventh year. A cornerstone of the relationship is the annual Seen and Heard Awards and accompanying report.

Seen and Heard 2009 is looking to recognise young people who have used their communication skills to tackle an issue that’s important to them; and for adults who have made a positive difference to young people’s lives.

Click here for details on how to apply for the 2009 Seen and Heard awards.

Download the Seen and Heard 2009 poster to spread the word in your school, youth club or local council.

The closing date for entries is 6 November 2009

BT Community Connections

Do you know a youth organisation that is looking for IT equipment and wants to get online?
If so, they can apply for a BT Community Connections award today.

Any youth organisation, working in any field of community benefit, located within the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland can apply for a laptop and a year’s free broadband connection. Past winners include pre-schools, mobile libraries, youth groups, eco projects, family support groups, community radio stations and sports teams.

Groups can also apply together to form a BTCC Cluster Award application – schools can even apply for an award at this level. If successful, all member groups will receive additional IT equipment for use within their local communities.

All applications must be received by 7 January 2010. For more information and to see case studies from past winners simply visit www.btcommunityconnections.com

The Personal Skills Journey

The ‘Personal Skills Journey’  consists of workshops, handouts and courses related to enterprise education.

It is designed to provide students with knowledge and skills which, if applied, will increase their marketability in the transition from ‘learning to earning’.

Aimed at students in the 14-19 age range, it explores skills commonly used in the world of work. It looks at how to effectively contribute and influence outcomes and how to make the best of one's own unique skill set.

Downloadable handbooks are available so that students can fill in the spaces with their own thoughts and learning points as well as read the material. This will help them to understand their own learning style and remember the key skills that are particularly relevant to them as an individual.

The Prince’s Rainforests Project for Schools

The education sector has a vital role to play in raising awareness about the importance of rainforests in stopping climate change. To support schools in this role, The Prince’s Rainforests Project (PRP) has created a special schools initiative as part of the wider public awareness campaign that was launched on May 5th 2009. Schools are being encouraged to sign up and help raise awareness among the children, parents and fellow educators through compelling learning in the classroom and the school community. To sign up a school and find out more visit www.rainforestSOS.org/schools

The PRP Schools Website is aimed at children, parents and teachers of children aged 3 to 16, and includes a range of free resources such as lesson ideas, assembly ideas, fun games and activities, competitions and short videos. There is an Awards scheme that classes can work through by completing rainforest lessons and projects, and an area where schools and teachers from around the world can share new ideas for lesson ideas and showcase their students’ work.

You can raise awareness about rainforests and their role in climate change and fundraise for your school through My Rainforest Project, an initiative that brings children’s rainforest artwork to life.  Or submit a photograph to the Sony/PRP Photographic Competition for Schools.

BT Community Champions

Do you have volunteers who help in your school, youth group, scouts or girl guides group who work for BT?

If so, under the BT Community Champions scheme, BT employees can apply for cash grants of up to £500 or for BT-branded sports clothing such as football strips that can benefit your organisation. Employees must have been involved with the school or community group for a minimum of 12 months and are asked to describe how the money would be spent.

There is just one more round of applications for the scheme this year – the next deadline is in December, so please check with your volunteers to see if they work for BT and encourage them to apply.

More information about the scheme is available at: http://www.btcommunitychampions.com/
