BT Internet Rangers

Do you know a young person who has made a difference by helping an older friend or relative to get online? BT is searching to find, reward and celebrate young ‘Internet Rangers’ who teach the older generation basic computer skills as well as how to use the internet.

Launched in 2003, the annual BT Internet Rangers Awards were set up following research which showed that nearly a third of parents and grandparents were taught to get online by young people aged between 13 and 16 years.

Four prizes of an HP laptop and £250 worth of IT vouchers will be awarded to the best Internet Rangers in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – and one overall national Internet Ranger of the Year will receive an additional £250 worth of IT vouchers.

This year for the first time a £5,000 grant will be awarded to the school - or group of schools - which does the most to promote and increase intergenerational activity to the wider community.  The aim of the award is to provide funding for a new digital inclusion activity or to increase an existing one.

But hurry, the closing date for applications is Friday 15th January 2010. Winners will be notified of their award by Friday 12th February 2010. To find out more visit the BT Internet Rangers website.

Resources for 14-19 year olds

Between now and March 2012, the development of new resources for the BetterWorld Campaign will be focused on the 14-19 age group.

It is envisaged they will focus on the importance of Communication, Collaboration and Innovation as both a life and work skill. There will be resources for Teachers and Educators to make the link between these skills and their importance in a practical work environment. There will also be resources to be used with young people in the classroom or other appropriate settings. Our current resources for 14-19 year old can be found here.

Coaching for Life update

Work is well underway to create a new resource to support the education programme of LOCOG (London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games). It is called Coaching for Life and will see the first module, Kids First Coach, released in April 2010. The programme will encourage parents and grandparents to help young people try different sports and at the same time introduce parents to ways they can help their children get better at anything. There will be competitions inviting digital media entries to demonstrate various aspects of coaching and its benefits. More details will follow soon.

2010 Teaching Awards – Who will be top of the class?

Entries are being invited for The Teaching Awards 2010.

The awards are an annual celebration of teaching and learning, and anybody - including teachers, head teachers, teaching assistants, governors, parents, pupils and the general public - can make a nomination.

There are a total of 13 categories - including three new ones for next year - and awards can be made to schools, teachers, head teachers, teaching assistants, learning partners and school governors.

BT sponsored the 2009 Award for Teacher of the Year in a Primary School. The award was presented to Steve Mills (pictured above) - deputy head of the William Ransom Primary School in Hitchin, Hertfordshire.

The awards are open to every educational establishment in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, including schools, pupil referral units and sixth-form colleges - whether state maintained or independent.

Young Citizen’s Action Agenda

Young people between the ages of 14 - 19 in the North West of England are being encouraged to give their opinions say as part of the Young Citizens' Say Survey.

The survey, gives young people in the North West the chance to tell the Prime Minister their views and help to shape the 20 year Regional Strategy currently being undertaken by the North West Development Agency.

The survey is open until midnight on Friday 18th December.

Do you know someone who would like a letter from Santa?

Imagine what it would be like for a young person to get their very own letter from Santa.

BT is, once again, supporting ChildLine’s Letter from Santa initiative. For a suggested donation of £5.00 you can order a personalised letter from Santa to be sent to the child or children of your choice. You could even send as a surprise gift to friends or colleagues who are just young at heart! Simply fill in the application form.

All orders must be received by 16 December
