Getting Connected – new free guide to the internet for people with learning disabilities

HFT, the national charity for people with learning disabilities, working in partnership with BT, have launched ‘GetConnected’ a free guide for people with learning disabilities wanting to use a computer for the first time.

‘Get Connected!’ offers practical advice helping people to choose a computer and equipment suitable for their needs. A DVD and help sheets provide information on using a computer for the first time, give tips on setting up the hardware, and offer simple advice on software, safety and security.

Suzannah Winsborrow from Oxfordshire has benefited from the project and been able to get online and improve her digital skills, she said: “I have been able to keep in touch with my friends and family and also tell people about my life and plan a future for myself with the aid of multimedia. I regularly email, go online and now I can turn photos into videos for my presentations.”

Kate Gascoyne, manager of HFT Centre in Abingdon, said: “Computers are fantastic tools to help with communication, self expression and the learning of new skills. Technology can be a great way to keep in contact with family and friends, and even help with shopping and paying the bills. This guide is an opportunity to get much needed information out to people and show them that computers can make life easier.”

The guide is available either as printed help sheets or on DVD and can currently be obtained free of charge by contacting the Abingdon HFT Centre by emailing ctec@hft.org.uk or calling 01235 835507.
