Texting: Sheila uses texting to keep independent

Sheila, who is over 60, is severely deaf and uses both text messages and e-mails to stay in touch with family and friends every day, several times a day. Nearly all of Sheila's friends send texts and e-mails. The fact that she has hearing difficulties means that it can sometimes be hard to speak on the phone and communication via other means is much easier.

"I have used a BT mobile daily for 5 years now, sending text messages and e-mails is great as they are cheaper and more convenient than phone calls or postage. You can also reply in your own time from wherever you are and the messages can be stored. For me, as a deaf person, it has made me feel far more independent and in touch with my friends and family."
