RNID Typetalk

RNID Typetalk is an operator based relay service run by RNID and paid for by BT. RNID Typetalk has over 300 operators who help textphone users to communicate with people using ordinary voice phones.

BT TextDirect

Where a BT TextDirect call is being made between people using an ordinary voice phone and a textphone, an RNID Typetalk operator will automatically join the call and translate what is being said, this works in the following way:

  1. The textphone user types what they want to say
  2. The RNID Typetalk Operator reads exactly what is typed to the person using the standard voice phone
  3. The person using the standard phone then replies
  4. The RNID Typetalk Operator types exactly what is said to the person using the textphone
  5. The reply is then displayed on the screen of the textphone

Using Voice Carry Over (VCO)

Also known as Voice Carry Through, VCO lets you talk or listen during a text call. You must either use a textphone with a built in handset, or connect a phone to the socket on the back of your Textphone for this service.
