Advice for web users who have Dyslexia and other learning difficulties

Change the look of webpages

The most commonly used browsers, such as Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator and Opera all let you adjust

  • The size and style of fonts used.
    If you prefer to read text in larger print then adjust the font size used on web pages to suit you. Using the right font such as Arial can make text easier to read.

  • The  colours for the page background.
    If you find a plain white background is too bright and uncomfortable when reading try using an 'off-white' or cream coloured background as a possible solution. If the colours on a website aren't suitable, change them to a combination that are
    Some websites, such as ours include a style changer, making it easy to change some of the settings without having to adjust your browser. However we also include help on adjusting some of the more popular browsers. More advice can be found in the Help menu of your browser.

Use a screen reader

Some users like to use screen reader software to read out the contents of a web page. As well as the text, more expensive screen readers will also interpret the HTML used on the page, identifying elements such as links, headings and subheadings. However more and more sites will now work with Browsealoud. This software, which is free for users to download, will read out the words on a web page.
