Setting up a network

In this section we have put together some instructions to help you set up a network to take extra advantage of your broadband connection. A home network is great for large households including group homes.

What can you do with a network?

Networking your computer means that you can connect up to 10 computers to the Internet at the same time, without slowing down your broadband connection. This could really benefit mixed ability households. For example a BSL user could make a video call over one PC and another family member could be surfing the Internet from another PC. See our BSL Broadband Guide for further information.

  • You can connect several computers in the same home (or small office) to one printer or scanner.

  • Once your computer is networked you can easily send files and information between your computers

  • You can send music, videos and pictures faster that ever before between your computers

  • You can choose between a fixed or wireless network. A wireless network means you can check your e-mails, surf the Internet or play games anywhere in the house or garden without trailing wires causing a problem. This may be ideal for mixed ability households including wheelchair users.

What do you need to set up a network?

  • ADSL Broadband - If you do not yet have a broadband connection, find out more about Broadband from BT
