Wendy Raper

Wendy Raper, from Lynton Park, Newcastle, started attending computer classes at her local Age Concern because she wanted to trace her family tree. With a specific aim in mind, Wendy was eager to learn both how to research on the internet, and write up her findings.

Although Wendy does have a computer at home, she is one of the nation's 80% of 55-64 year olds who are not confident in using all of its functions. She used to worry that she might do something wrong and break such an expensive piece of technology. But with the help of the classes at her local Age Concern, she is overcoming these fears and is becoming more confident with each class she attends. Wendy now regularly uses Microsoft Word to write up documents, and will soon be installing internet access at home.

She said, "I have a great interest in antiques and I would like to use the internet to look up information about them. I also enjoy art and cannot wait to start diving into my hobby online. There is so much information out there; it's great to be having lessons to learn how to get hold of it! My friends are keen that I get access at home so that they can email me."
