Most of the major high street shops and supermarkets, including BT, have websites that let you browse and then buy online. There are also many online-only shopping and auction websites. It is obviously important that organisations understand the need to produce accessible websites so that disabled customers can make the most of broadband.

Because broadband is always available you can switch on your computer at any time day or night to do your shopping. If you have a condition which means you have difficulty sleeping at night, you could use this time to do your weekly grocery shop.

If high street shopping proves difficult because you have difficulty reading labels to check sizes and prices, shopping on-line may help. With broadband you can have quick and easy access to your favourite high street shops. You can then take your time to look up details about a product and find the best price before your decide whether to buy.

Home delivery

The other big advantage of shopping on-line is that you get home delivery, which may be helpful to older and disabled people who are unable to leave home without assistance. Many sites offer next day delivery if you need an item quickly. If you are buying a present, some sites will gift wrap it for you, include a message and then deliver it to any address you choose.

Specialist items

If you are looking for a specialist item you may not be able to get it locally, but by using the Internet you can access shops all over the world. For example if you are looking for some assistive equipment for your impairment, you can find a specialist supplier who know about and stock what you need.
