Getting started with broadband

Whether you already use a computer or are about to buy one for the first time, it is very simple to get onto the Internet with broadband.

You need to make sure that your computer can be connected to the Internet. If your computer is less than 5 years old you should be ok but if you are unsure any computer supplier can help you with this. If you use an Apple Mac, check with the Internet Service Provider (ISP) you want to use as some of their services may not work on Apple Mac.

You also need to check that broadband is available where you live. You can either check this yourself by looking at www.broadbandchecker.co.uk or you can ask an ISP to tell you. It is estimated that 99.8% of the UK is covered. If you live in the countryside, you might need a satellite connection to get broadband.

There are a few different types of broadband connection. The most popular for the home is ADSL, which allows you to download from the Internet quickly. ADSL broadband is provided through your normal phone line. You can still then use your phone at the same time as using the Internet.

You are now ready to choose an Internet Service Provider and choose the right broadband package for you.
