Seen and Heard report 2006

Seen and Heard 2006 combines inspiring stories with specific 'How To' guidance that aims to equip and empower young people to make themselves heard and to make a difference. We hope this approach will be the trigger to motivate young people and adults to work together to improve the lives of all young people, and prove that whatever the circumstance, we all have the right and ability to be heard. This year, for the first time, we are also recognising adults and organisations which have made an effort to listen to young people and helped them to pursue their goals.

BT/Young Scot Podcasting workshops

BT and Young Scot, a Scottish youth organisation, joined forces to run podcasting training workshops throughout Scotland. The workshops, which took place in early July, taught young people how to make a podcast, or internet radio programme. The workshops focused on improving communication skills such as listening and interviewing as well as teaching the participants the technical skills necessary to make and edit a podcast. The aim of the training was to enable young people in Scotland to make and use podcasts as a way of communicating about issues or events in their local area. Martin Dewar, Senior Development Officer at Young Scot commented on the workshops: "Young Scot is delighted to be working with BT on podcasting, a project that will allow further engagement with young people through getting young people involved in the creation of podcasts and also from the perspective of the podcast audience, by providing an alternative to the written word and inviting feedback."

Giant Sleepover

More than 34,000 children took part in this year's BT's Giant Sleepover smashing two Guinness World Records - one for the largest ever simultaneous sleepover and a second for the biggest tooth brushing event. BT held more than 500 sleepovers in the UK and in India - which involved children aged between six and 11 raising thousands of pounds for ChildLine and local community projects. The next morning at precisely 8.30am all the children broke the world record teeth cleaning challenge by simultaneously brushing their teeth for two minutes.

BT employee fundraising

  • A trek in the Himalayas by over 30 BT employees and suppliers raised £41,000 for Childline and £15,000 for the Kite Project in India, an educational programme in one of the most deprived parts of India.
  • Over £40,000 has been raised by BT employees who braved the gruelling 26 miles of the London Marathon in support of various charities including ChildLine.
  • BT employees continue to collect money for ChildLine at the smash hit rock 'n' roll variety show, "That'll Be The Day" shows every week, raising a total of £68,000.

Thank you to everyone for their hard work!
