California dreamin

Golden Gate BridgeThis September hardcore cyclists will be heading Stateside for a bike ride of epic proportions.

Setting off from Yosemite National Park, east California, the 300-mile charity cycle will be tracing the Pacific shoreline before finishing in San Francisco.

The ride will see dedicated cyclists and fundraisers pedalling up hills, past vineyards and over the Golden Gate Bridge to raise money for Action on Hearing Loss.

And cycling enthusiast Jo Pickard will be pumping her tyres to join them.

Giving back

As head of community and event fundraising for the charity, Jo Pickard is always on the hunt for new and exciting challenges to tempt their loyal supporters. Having summited Kilimanjaro and trekked to Everest Base Camp, a bike ride through sunny California should be a breeze for the loyal fundraiser.

Jo said: “I thought it was time I gave back something back by raising sponsorship for my favourite charity and enjoying an event for what it is, as opposed to being there for work.”

One in six

For Jo, there is a serious message behind Action on Hearing Loss’s fundraising. An estimated one in six of the UK’s population have some form of hearing loss.

Action on Hearing Loss campaigns for a world where hearing loss doesn't limit or label people, where tinnitus is silenced – and where people value and look after their hearing.

Jo said: “I feel passionate about improving the lives and the world we live in for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. It’s not a sexy cause – people think going deaf is part of getting old, but the reality is that people who are deaf, hard of hearing or suffering with tinnitus can be routinely excluded from daily life.”

Supporting the programme

For Jo, using the MyDonate fundraising platform for the event programme makes sure more money goes to the charity compared with using other online giving providers.

She said: “We’ve got hundreds of supporters taking part in any number of events (Great South Run, Royal Parks Half Marathon, Great Wall of China Trek) using MyDonate to gather sponsorship.”
