Brave Donna swaps locks for donations
“Shaving your hair off isn't something everyone would choose to do,” says fundraiser Donna Miller, “it's very personal.”
Usually Newcastle-based Donna runs for charity, but when supporting a cause close to her heart she decided to step out of her comfort zone.
Donna explains: “My hair is my comfort so this is a huge challenge for me.”
This November Donna is aiming to raise £1,000 by shaving off her long locks for two charities – the If U Care Share Foundation and Sara’s Hope Foundation.
Donna will also be donating her tresses to the Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides wigs for children suffering hair loss.
Just over a year ago, Donna’s world was shattered when a close friend took his own life. The If U Care Share Foundation were paramount in helping the community deal with their sudden loss.
The suicide prevention and bereavement charity works in areas of the North East of England.
Donna says: “The money raised will go toward funding the vital Support After Suicide Service (SAS). This provides those who have lost a loved one to suicide with one-to-one practical and emotional support as well as access to various alternative therapies to combat some of the more difficult aspects of suicide bereavement.”
Allison Younger from the If U Care Share Foundation adds: “We’re extremely grateful for this brave gesture. Donna’s been a huge supporter of our charity’s work.”
Donna is also supporting Sara’s Hope Foundation, a charity founded by Ged and Julie Hoburn in memory of their daughter Sara.
The charity provides a holiday retreat offering respite for children and young people with cancer and their families, offering ‘smiles, hope and precious memories’.
“Monies raised from this event will provide a family with one week’s break at Sara’s Retreat in Crete,” says Carol Bennett from Sara’s Foundation, “all thanks to Donna.”
