Making every penny count for Nova

Nicky HomesFrom long distance swimming, cycling and running, Nova International’s challenges (which include the Bupa Great North Run series and British Gas Great Swim series) raise an estimated £50m a year for charity through sponsorship.

Interviewed on the MyDonate-sponsored Guardian Fundraising hub, Nova commercial director, Nicky Homes, said she wants all this hard earned money to go directly towards the charities nominated by entrants.

"On average we estimate that across the events that we do £50m is donated to a variety of charities, big and small, said Nicky.

“From the NSPCC, Macmillan Cancer Support and Guide Dogs, right down to small local charities in cities like Manchester and Newcastle that don't usually have access to large-scale fundraising," she said.

Unlike many online fundraisers, MyDonate charges no registration or set-up fees, so every penny of the donor's cash can goes to their selected charity. That’s one of the key reasons why Nova is partnering with MyDonate.

For instance, had all the donations made in last year's Great Run and Great Swim series had gone through MyDonate an extra £2.5m would have been raised.

This would have made a real difference to charities that know that every penny they collect can make a difference in these challenging economic times.

Said Nicky: "BT has donated all the staff and developed the IT system so that it can be free. That for us was a different angle, so we thought it was a great idea to partner up with them. We never actively push any event participants to one particular way of fundraising, but we recommend MyDonate."
