10,000 miles to Mongolia in a £750 van from eBay
Mongolia conjures up images of serene Buddhist temples, snow-capped mountains and the legend of Genghis Khan. It also features some of the worst roads in the world.
Undeterred, in July Lauren Joseph and Lucy Dalby are driving from London to Mongolia for charity. Hitting the road in a Daihatsu Hijet van, found on eBay for £750, they’ll be relying on old fashioned maps to navigate the 10,000 mile trip.
The pair will be raising funds for Guy’s Trust – a charity set up in memory of Lauren’s brother, Guy Joseph.
A lifetime of plans
Guy was only 25 years old when he was tragically killed in a paragliding accident on the 14th of October 2011.
A few months after his death, Guy’s Trust was set up in his memory. The charity creates educational opportunities for young people in developing countries, particularly places with which Guy had a special connection.
Building educational opportunities
During the summer of 2011 Guy spent several weeks travelling around Cambodia.
In Cambodia it is estimated that whilst 95 per cent of children are enrolled in school, only 61 per cent complete primary education.
Guy’s Trust, in partnership with ActionAid, is funding the construction of two Guy Joseph Primary schools in the south west of Cambodia.
Supporting marine conservation
Money raised will also support internships for Indonesian students studying marine conservation.
Guy lived in Indonesia for two years, working as a diving instructor. During his time there he helped to set up MantaWatch, protecting the endangered manta ray.
Lauren adds: “This way, we are providing opportunities for these students while also promoting the amazing work of MantaWatch.”
Taking the smallest percentage of money raised
For Lauren, the decision to use MyDonate was easy. She said: “It was the website that took the smallest percentage of money raised. It's helpful to have a single point to direct people to, where we have the opportunity to explain what we're doing and why we're doing it.”
