Cyclist saddles up for 1,000 mile fundraising challenge
“Life’s all about challenges,” says 53 year old cycling enthusiast Steve Tippins from Marlborough in Wiltshire, “and this is my biggest personal challenge yet – so bring it on.”
Steve’s rallying cry comes as he approaches the start date of his one thousand mile cycle ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats in aid of New Life, a charity that raises money for special care baby units in and around Berkshire and Wiltshire.
Steve has always been an active, sporty person and, even after two hip replacements, he maintains a ravenous appetite to raise money.
Gearing up for the challenge
Steve explains: “I played football for thirty years but then my hips needed replacing so I switched to swimming and cycling. I’ve been raising money for New Life for about 20 years now and that’s going to continue. Last time out I raised money by riding from Newbury to Paris – but on May 24th – that’s when the big one starts. I’m really excited.”
Steve, who will be completing the event with two friends - Charles Gardner and Pete ‘one lung’ Willetts, has been fundraising for his event using MyDonate.
Raise the target
“My fundraising is going great guns because MyDonate is so easy to use. My donors love it. I’ve raised my target from £1,000 to £2,000.”
Steve’s favourite charity, New Life, was founded by Trevor Goodall in 1995 memory of his sons Joshua and Samuel.
To date, the charity and its supporters have raised more than £400,000 helping to increase the chances of survival for many premature and seriously ill babies and supporting hospitals such as Swindon and Reading.
Tina Hull from New Life says the charity was looking for an online fundraising service last year and came across MyDonate.
No going back
“We haven’t looked back since,” she says. “All our fundraisers now use it. It gives us complete control. The reporting is great, the payments system works like a dream and best of all it’s 100 per cent free.” “Everyone at New Life is fully behind Steve Tippins and his cycling mates. He’s an amazing fundraiser and a brilliant friend to our charity.”
