Riding to the rock to give young people a head start
In June Alexander Cooke will be leading a team of motorcycle riders to ‘Ride to the Rock’ - a trip from Dover to Gibraltar to raise money for charity.
The team of eight motorcycle riders will attempt to complete the 2,117-mile journey in just six days and hope to raise £1 per mile.
2014 is Alexander’s 50th anniversary of riding motorcycles and a few years ago he decided to use his hobby to help raise funds for FORCE 5 Education - a Bedfordshire-based charity that helps disadvantaged young people get started in life.
Empowering young people
FORCE 5 Education seeks to support marginalised and disadvantaged students and youths from 8 to 18 years and introduce them to real craft skills and vocational skills, as well as giving them the opportunity to learn in the outdoor environment. Se
Ride to the Rock will start at Dover, on England’s south coast, and head down through France, Spain and Gibraltar to finish at Tarifa, facing Africa across the Strait of Gibraltar.
Alexander’s previous long distance motorcycle fundraising trips have included England to Moscow and St Petersburg, the circuit of Ireland and riding to the Arctic Circle in Northern Norway.
No loss of funds
Two of Alexander’s team are using the cycle to raise money for different charities but all eight are using MyDonate for their fundraising.
Alexander said: “I found MyDonate on the internet when I was looking for ways for people to help sponsor our Ride to the Rock. In the past I have used other online fundraising services but I felt BT MyDonate was a better option as there are no loss of funds to pay for the service.”
Peter Stamford, construction tutor for FORCE 5 Education, said: “We at FORCE 5 Education would like to thank Alex Cooke and the team for taking on the challenge and riding to Gibraltar in order to help to raise money to help young people.
He went on to say: “All monies raised will go directly towards courses which help to change lives. FORCE 5 Education is staffed entirely by volunteers and all donations go directly to those who need it.”
