Shirley gets set for a month of volunteering in Nepal

Shirley RoseMyDonate fundraiser Shirley Rose is counting down the days to February 28th.

Because that’s the day Shirley will wave goodbye to the UK and fly off to Nepal to begin a month’s volunteering at a mosaic project.

“I really can’t wait,” she says, “I’ll be spending a whole month doing something I absolutely love and supporting a great cause – albeit a long way from home.”

Shirley is taking a break from her day job as a charity worker, freelance trainer and consultant to help teach young people rescued from a life of trafficking to stand on their own feet by learning creative skills such as creating mosaics.

This mosaic project is being run by Freedom Matters - a charity that rescues and rehabilitates trafficked young people. The project aims to offer participants skills and training leading to employment and self-sufficiency.

Therapeutic benefits

Says Shirley: “I intend to be teaching basic mosaic skills to rescued young women in specially created centres. Mosaic can be extremely therapeutic and can help people to come to terms with their past traumatic experiences. I believe this will make a real difference to their well being and life opportunities.”

Shirley first became involved with making mosaics many years ago when a community artist worked at her children’s primary school.

“I have since taught beginners classes and have been involved with a range of projects, including producing a small mosaic, along with other artists for a hospital mural, to raise money for the project in Nepal,” added Shirley.
