Wayne Rooney testimonial at Old Trafford

 Rooney

12 years ago, a football prodigy was transferred to Manchester United FC from Everton FC. But even then, nobody could have foreseen just how big a star Wayne Rooney would become. With 520 appearances and 245 goals under his belt for the Red Devils, he is hailed as ‘England’s best’ by many.

To celebrate Rooney’s remarkable career, a testimonial match between Manchester United and Everton will be held at Old Trafford on Wednesday 3 August (kick-off 20:00 BST). BT MyDonate is the official donation partner for the match, which will be the first of a number of fundraising events by the United and England captain’s Foundation.

The Wayne Rooney foundation is aiming to raise vital funds for disadvantaged and vulnerable children. All proceeds from the testimonial match and from all other events will go to four children’s charities, chosen by Rooney: the NSPCC, Claire House Children's Hospice, Alder Hey Children's Hospital and the Manchester United Foundation. BT MyDonate is the official fundraising platform for all of the events.

Fans will also get a chance to see Jose Mourinho’s first appearance in his newly appointed role as the team’s manager. This will be the first pre-season fixture to be played at the Theatre of Dreams for two years. Speaking about the upcoming game, Rooney said, “For me there could not be a more special Testimonial match. Manchester United and Everton are the only clubs I have played for as a professional footballer. I am happy to say now that, whatever may happen in the future, I will never play for another Premier League club.”

BT is the principal partner of the newly launched Wayne Rooney Foundation, which aims to build a lasting legacy to improve the lives of children and young people. Wayne said “I owe United and Everton everything for giving me my footballing opportunities. Through the Wayne Rooney Foundation I want to put something back and, at the same time, say a heartfelt thanks to everyone at these great clubs who ever helped me in my career.”
