MyDonate charity celebrates three years of gifting special weddings
When you have a terminal illness, every moment with your other half matters. Time is precious - so planning a wedding can be overwhelming.
Gift of a Wedding is a charity which launched on Valentine’s day 2012, to provide dream wedding days for people with terminal or life-shortening illnesses.
The charity is the only one of its kind in the north west of England, offering free weddings for those with little time left to live.
“Getting married, for most people, is probably one of the most emotional and expensive days of their lives,” says Patricia Harrison, the charity’s founder. “Imagine what it must be like, therefore, for someone with a terminal illness who does not have the time, strength or finances to create a day that most of us take for granted.”
The charity provides no cost weddings through donations of goods and services from experienced and trustworthy wedding and hospitality professionals across the UK.
This generosity, coupled with philanthropic support from the public, and fundraising through free websites like MyDonate, means the charity are able to gift dream weddings to more couples.
Cost effective fundraising
The charity plans to arrange ten weddings this year. In order to realise this ambition, they need to raise around £25,000.
Patricia explains why she chose to register with MyDonate: “It was the most cost effective way our charity was able to receive donations online”. She says: “New charities need all the help they can get when they first set up. MyDonate gives people fundraising for us an easy way to collect donations.”
