Hope floats for Syria in virtual balloon race

hot air balloonRoll out the Barrel Trust is running a virtual balloon race online throughout October, with all proceeds going towards  sending Rolling Water Barrels to Syrian children in Za’atari Camp, Jordan.

The Trust estimates that there are around five million displaced people from Syria in refugee camps. Of these, one million children, some as young as four, are forced to travel long distances to collect water in small containers. Sometimes three or four times a day.

“A simple solution to a perennial problem world wide”

Roll out the Barrel sends Rolling Water Barrels to communities around the world, providing a simple solution to collecting water.

The concept is simple: a push/pull 30 litre Roll-Along Water Barrel with a handle and rubber tyres. Yet it makes a massive difference.

A Rolling Water Barrel enables women or children to collect water quickly, safely, hygienically and in sufficient quantities to sustain a family for a day or longer.

Making a difference

To date, more than 300 Roller Barrels have been delivered by the trust with children in Uganda, Sierra Leone, Kenya and Zambia being among the recipients. However, with the war raging in Syria, funding is urgently needed to send out more to Syrian children in the Za’atari Camp, Jordan, replacing unhygienic cans, bottles, jerry cans and buckets.

Natalie Areias, fundraising co-ordinator for Roll Out the Barrel Trust, said:

“We can't solve the world's problems but we can make a real difference to these children. They could be your son or daughter, brother/sister, nephew/niece, cousin even friend. Help us stop this travesty please.”

Reaching out to new audiences

Natalie believes MyDonate has helped publicise their cause, enabling them to reach wider audiences.

She said: “We believe that by using MyDonate it will help us reach out to an audience that we otherwise wouldn’t have been able to. It is also really easy to link with our social media platforms. It enables our supporters to make their own choices as to how they would like to donate, many finding the online option a much more convenient and safer one.”

The race will take place from the 5th November 2013 - 19 November 2013. To buy a balloon please visit their website (live 27th September 2013 until 4th November 2013).
