BT extends global media network to the Netherlands

BT enables the delivery of high quality, real time video and data content between the Netherlands and popular media markets worldwide
BT today announced it is extending the reach of its global media network (GMN) to the Media Park in Hilversum; the center of the Dutch broadcasting industry. The network extension will enable the delivery of high quality, real time video and data content between the Netherlands and popular media hubs worldwide, offering a viable, high performance and cost effective alternative to satellite and leased line connectivity into and out of the country. The service is expected to be ready by September this year.
The network extension - announced at the ‘Mediapark Jaarcongres’ - integrates seamlessly with the ‘Dutch Media Hub’; an industry-wide initiative led by iMMovator, a cross-media network organisation focusing on innovation and economic progress.
Bas Burger, CEO BT Benelux, said: “Today’s announcement demonstrates BT’s financial commitment to the Dutch media industry to help its customers weather these challenging economic times. We firmly believe that this will bring additional broadcast services business to the region. Our GMN provides the secure media backbone which enables the essential interchanges between the worlds distributed media organisations. The platform can provide the capability to source and distribute programme content to major media centres in the world including London, Paris, Los Angeles, New York, New Delhi, Sydney and Singapore.”
Ton van Mil, managing director, iMMovator, added: “We consider innovation to be the major driver for economic progress in the region, hence we more than welcome the network extension to Hilversum. BT’s GMN empowers the Dutch Media Hub initiative by providing global connectivity and stimulating international business for Dutch companies. The network with secure converged video, sound and data internetworking, seamlessly integrates with our goal of strengthening the Dutch cross-media sector.”
The GMN, with coverage in more than 70 locations across ten countries, is based on multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) networking technology. Its fully redundant architecture delivers optimal availability to television and production distributors and supports the media industry’s transition from video tape to file transfer, enabling the transfer of large capacity files between servers.
BT has extensive expertise in the media and broadcasting industry. It has built the very latest global, digital network and media applications and services for managing and distributing today’s media content worldwide.
