Who we are and what we do:
ParalympicsGB is the trading name of the British Paralympic Association; a registered charity. We help Britain's top athletes with a disability achieve their goal of competing at the highest level at the Paralympic Games. We are responsible for selecting, preparing, entering, funding and managing the British team. In practice, this means everything from nurturing talent, supporting coaches, providing medical staff to financing travel to competition. As the flag bearer for disability sport, it is our aim to do everything we can to ensure that the British Team performs to its absolute best and we bring home as many medals as we can - we want to make you proud!
Our successful team
Since the first Paralympic Games in 1960, Britain has consistently been among the top performing nations. At the last Paralympic Games in Athens, the team won an amazing 35 Golds, 30 Silver and 29 Bronze medals, putting us second in the medal table behind China. But, standards around the world are rising. More and more nations are competing and funding their programmes extensively. The difference between winning and losing has never been tighter. Gareth Duke won gold in the 100m breaststroke SB6 at the Athens Paralympic Games by three one hundredths of a second. With your generous help, we want to give Gareth and all our talented athletes the best possible opportunity to win again in Beijing in September 2008 and in London 2012.
Why we need your help
Paralympic athletes have the same ambition, talent and sheer determination to compete and win as their able-bodied counterparts. They are all fantastic achievers who covet the chance to represent their country. But they have additional hurdles to overcome on their path to their top - for them, the challenge is even greater.
ParalympicsGB actively supports the identification of the Paralympics athletes of the future and helps them on their way to Paralympic glory. We encourage the most promising candidates, introduce them to the best coaches and facilities, and ensure that they have as much support as they need.
Our ambition is to be able to provide this support to many more young disabled people, whether they're children born with a disability or adults disabled later in life. A few may go on to become Paralympic medallists themselves, but all will benefit from meeting the challenge of sport.
To do this we need your help. We are a charity and we rely on donations to fund a large part of our activities.
