KEY ACHIEVEMENTS OF
BT'S GLOBAL FAMILY IN 1998/99
In consortium with NTT of Japan, ST Telecommunications and Singapore
Power, BT was awarded both fixed and mobile telecommunication licences
by the Singapore government in April 1998.
In June 1998, Cegetel announced an agreement with America Online,
Bertelsmann and Canal+ to create a leading provider of on-line and Internet
services in France.
Telfort launched the first fully digital mobile service in the Netherlands
in September 1998. Telfort is BT's 50/50 joint venture with national railway
company Nederlandse Spoorwegen.
Viag Interkom, BT's joint venture in Germany, launched its mobile
communications and Internet services, also in September 1998. Viag Interkom
is the first company in Germany to provide fixed, mobile and Internet
services from a single supplier.
BT bought a 13.79 per cent stake in Kymata Ltd, a new UK-based
opto-electronics company, in December 1998. Kymata aims to become the
leading supplier of bandwidth products in the UK.
