BT's CSR Week - now in its fourth year - features a host of events

BT Group director of corporate responsibility Adrian Hosford has paid tribute to the support of BT people in backing the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.
He was speaking after the publication of the results of a survey of BT people designed to measure the effectiveness of the company’s internal CSR communications in preparation for BT’s annual CSR Week, which runs from today (Monday) until Friday. The survey reveals that BT’s internal communications is so reliable that employees trust the information it provides on environment and society issues more than the information they receive from government, pressure groups, high street retailers and the media. The survey, which was open to all BT employees, highlights how good employee engagement and targeted internal campaigns can be a powerful tool for bringing about behavioural change and driving an organisation’s CSR agenda. More than half of those surveyed (58 per cent) agreed that BT’s employee awareness initiatives on CSR are an effective way of raising awareness of important information and engaging employees. And 62 per cent of people said internal BT initiatives like CSR Week, Environment Week and The BIG Switch Off - a campaign to encourage employees to save energy at work and at home - have influenced their eco-friendly habits. The findings are supported by the fact that 35,000 BT people - more than one in three of the workforce - are involved in voluntary CSR activities. Adrian said: “It is fantastic news that our staff believe we are the most trusted source of information on social and environmental issues. We weren’t necessarily expecting such positive feedback from the survey, but it helps prove that we are on the right track. “We are also encouraged by more than 65 per cent of BT people saying that they feel proud to work for the company because of its CSR activities. Our employees are our brand ambassadors and it is vital we continue to regularly communicate with them and give them the opportunity to shape the way we operate.” CSR Week is now in its fourth year. Events taking place include a special CSR fair at BT Centre in London on Wednesday (12 March), where exhibitors such as Nigel’s Eco Store, Planet Organic, Eurostar, Biffa and others will be showcasing and, in some cases, selling their products and services. There will also be a special address from the chairman to employees, webchats, a series of employee roadshows at BT locations in the UK and overseas, information and ideas on how BT people can reduce their environmental footprint at work and at home, and a special insight briefing into wind power and alternative energy by E.ON. BT Retail consumer managing director Gavin Patterson said: “CSR is key to our overall business success and, as BT's CSR champion, I would encourage you to participate wherever you can."
