Engineers embark on a great journey

A new initiative has been launched in Openreach with the aim of helping engineers get to the right place with the right network information.

Called the Network Engineering Journey (NEJ), it is a business solution which, from day one, has had better records, which will grow in accuracy over time through teamwork between field engineers, planners and e-recorders.

As a result, unrecorded parts of the network, previously lost from view, will now be visible for all to use. Planners will be able to see what work is in progress and how they might work together to serve customers faster and more cost-effectively.

“A year ago we could not imagine today happening,” said NEJ programme director Derek Hewins at the launch event, held at the BT Tower in London. “The scale and depth of issues we had were unforgiving, but we set about working to a single goal to discover how to make life easier for engineers, planners and e-recorders.”

The new solution is grounded in a collaboration between Operations, BT Design and Operate, Telcordia, Offshore Data Conversion Partners and the programme team. Launched in January, in London North, new customer orders of every type - copper, fibre, new sites and repayments - have now been successfully planned using the new solution, and are at various stages in the delivery life-cycle. Updates from engineers showing what work has been done and, in many cases, new network assets they have discovered, are now being recorded by teams in e-records using new NEJ tools.

At the BT Tower event, attendees were invited to the 34th floor, where they had the chance to test drive the new solution. They were joined by Openreach chief executive Steve Robertson, who said: “What I love about this programme is that it’s bringing together processes, systems and people in a way that I want to see our business working.”

Following the benefits evaluation in London North, it is expected that the new NEJ business solution will be rolled out nationally in the autumn.
