US telecoms company Motorola has announced a $165 million (£83m) worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) infrastructure contract with Etihad Atheeb Telecommunication Company (Atheeb).
Motorola says it will enable compelling broadband services to subscribers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Atheeb says it selected Motorola based on the company’s ability to deliver a fully integrated nationwide WiMAX solution. The contract includes the delivery of Motorola's new wireless application protocol 800 access point, featuring smart antenna technology and a comprehensive service package. Motorola said broadband will now be available to customers across Saudi Arabia, especially areas that until now have been underserved. Ali Amer, Motorola home and networks mobility vice-president for the Middle East, Africa and Pakistan, said: "Motorola is delighted to be working side by side with Atheeb to address the appetite of Saudi customers for high-speed communications. This will be delivered using Motorola's proven WiMAX technology and services.”
